Who's this qualification for?

The Paediatric Massage Consultant (PMC) qualification is for students who already hold a certificate, diploma or degree that is related to infant massage, working with parents, working with children or training which covered anatomy and physiology.

Qualification prerequisites

Qualifications such as massage therapy, naturopathy, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, osteopathy, counselling, psychology, social work, early childhood qualifications or science based degrees all meet prerequisite requirements for the PMC qualification.

A significant number of qualifications and fields relate to infant massage and working with children and their parents. Accordingly, as opposed to having a definitive list of prerequisite qualifications, each PMC application is considered on a case-by-case basis. Students are able to provide a copy of either their qualification, or the units of study completed thus far for their PMC application.

What will you learn?

Learn how to work with parents, teaching a full-body massage routine appropriate for infants and children, adaptations for wind, reflux and common digestive issues such as constipation. Stroke adaptations are also taught for pre-term and low birth weight infants, children with special needs and adaptations for older children (from birth through to adolescence). Contraindications that are specific to massage for infants and low birth weight infants are also covered. A unit of study on utilising your new qualification will help you to prepare for taking infant massage classes and appointments with parents.

Our PMC students also learn how to prepare a 1 hour presentation to a professional group on the benefits of infant massage, present research findings, address common myths related to infant massage and provide information on services available to parents in the infant massage field via their final assessment task.

What can you do with this qualification?

Use the course for your continual professional development or, if you already work with parents and infants, you may also utilise your new qualification in your place of work.

Following the course you can work privately, taking appointments and classes with parents. Place your information in locations frequently visited by parents and infants (such as long day care centres, chemists, maternity stores etc). Parents can then contact you directly to arrange a private appointment or attendance at one of your baby massage parent classes.

In addition to working with parents, you can also provide 1-2 hour in-service style presentations to professional groups on the benefits of infant massage, infant massage research and services available to parents in the infant massage field. There are a number of professional fields you may present to such as early childhood staff, allied health professionals, medical staff, social workers, counsellors, psychologists etc. There is also an opportunity for you to generate additional referral work for your infant massage parent classes and appointments via the professionals you present to. As a PMC, you can be paid anywhere from $120 - $350 for a 1 hour presentation on infant massage to a professional group.
