Who is the Paediatric Massage Consultant (PMC) qualification for?
The Paediatric Massage Consultant (PMC) qualification is available to students who meet prerequisite requirements. Paediatric students need to hold a qualification in a field that is related to infant massage. This includes professionals in fields such as health, allied health, natural therapies and early childhood education. Students who have not yet obtained a related qualification but are currently enrolled in a related course (such as nursing, midwifery, massage, early childhood diploma or teaching, etc) can also apply for the baby/infant massage certification.
Qualification prerequisites
Examples of qualifications that meet the prerequisite requirements for the Paediatric and Infant Massage Certification, online or in person, include:
- Massage therapy
- Naturopathy
- Nursing
- Midwifery
- Physiotherapy
- Osteopathy
- Counselling
- Psychology
- Social work
- Early Childhood
- Science based degrees
A significant number of qualifications and fields relate to infant massage and because of this, each PMC application is considered on its own merits on a case-by-case basis. Students who don't hold a related qualification but would like to pursue the PMC qualification may have previous work experience considered as a way to meet the necessary requirements. Students provide a copy of their qualifications, the units of study completed thus far for any related course they may be enrolled in, or a resume outlining related positions and experience. Supporting documentation does not need to be provided at the time of enrolment.
Students will receive an email request for scanned copies or clear photo images of supporting documents, prior to their face-to-face training dates or on the commencement of correspondence study for an online infant massage certification.
What will you learn?
Learn how to work with parents, teaching a full-body massage routine appropriate for infants and children, with adaptations for wind, reflux and common digestive issues such as constipation.
The pediatric and infant massage certification also teaches stroke adaptations for pre-term and low birth weight infants, children with special needs, and older children (from birth through to adolescence). Contraindications that are specific to massage for infants and low birth weight infants are also covered by the paediatric massage certification, online as well as in person.
A unit of study on utilising your new qualification will help you to prepare for taking infant massage classes and appointments with parents. The course also focuses on using baby massage as a tool to enhance bonding and attachment between parent and child.
PMC students also learn how to prepare 1-hour, theory-based presentations to professional groups on the benefits of certified infant massage, present research findings, address common myths related to infant massage, and provide information on services available to parents in the infant massage field via their final assessment task.
What can you do with this qualification?
Use the course for your continual professional development or, if you already work with parents and infants, you can utilise your new qualification in your place of work.
After completing your paediatric massage training, you can also work privately if you wish, taking infant massage appointments and classes with parents. Place your information in locations frequently visited by parents and infants (such as long day care centres, chemists, maternity stores etc). Parents can then contact you directly to arrange a private appointment or attendance at one of your baby massage parent classes.
In addition to working with parents, you can also provide 1-hour theory-based presentations to professional groups on the benefits of certified infant massage, infant massage research, and services available to parents in the infant massage field.
There are a number of professional fields you may present to such as early childhood staff, allied health professionals, medical staff, social workers, counsellors and psychologists who always want to know more about the importance of infant massage, the benefits massage provides, and the positive impact massage can have on families.
There is also an opportunity for you to generate additional referral work, via the professionals you present to.
As a PMC, you can be paid anywhere from $120 to $350 for a 1-hour presentation to a professional group.
Why choose IMIS for your infant massage certification?
The Infant Massage Information Service (IMIS) is Australia's largest infant massage training organisation, and it also has the country's largest membership of certified instructors. We offer the country's top courses for you to become certified in infant massage.
Since our establishment in 2000, we have worked to ensure that people receive professional training that incorporates the most recent data on research on effective methods.
Our infant massage course includes the most comprehensive information on massage and touch therapy for newborns, preterm infants, and infants with wind, colic, constipation, reflux, sleeping difficulties and respiratory disorders.
Proper training in teaching infant massage is crucial because, like with any other kind of therapy, knowing the right methods will improve the experience and prevent overstimulation, maximizing the health benefits for the baby.
Baby massage has many excellent advantages, for both babies and the family as a whole. It helps to provide essential communication between parent and child, as well as promoting the baby's overall health and well being.
We provide a rewarding opportunity and ongoing support to learn massage. Students can work with parents internationally, not only Australian families, to promote infant well being.

Excellent course, important for midwives to ensure current knowledge. Knowing the correct techniques of Baby Massage is great. The program runs well with an excellent presenter who was very encouraging to all students. I liked how we were taught practical massage on the baby several times. Thank you for a great 3 days.
