Support your staff to confidently guide parents in using infant and child massage

The Infant Massage Information Service (IMIS) provides tailored staff training for teams working with infants, children and families across health, early childhood and community settings.

This training supports staff to confidently guide and support parents to use infant and child massage within everyday interactions, group programs and early relational work.

With over 26 years of experience delivering infant and paediatric massage training, IMIS has supported professionals across health, early childhood and community settings.

Who this training is for

We work with organisations including:

  • Child and Family Health Services
  • Hospitals and maternity units
  • Early childhood education and care services
  • Community and family support programs
  • Perinatal and infant mental health services
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations
  • Not-for-profit and government services

A safe, family-centred approach

IMIS training is grounded in cue-based, family-centred practice.

Staff are not trained to massage infants directly.

Staff are supported to:

  • Guide and support parents to massage their own baby
  • Demonstrate techniques using a doll
  • Read and respond to infant cues and engagement
  • Work within safe, appropriate professional boundaries

This approach supports best practice while reducing risk and maintaining clear scope of practice.

How this can be used in practice

Following training, staff are able to integrate this work into:

  • Parent education sessions and group programs
  • Early parenting and family support services
  • Home visiting and individual support
  • Perinatal and early relational work
  • Programs supporting bonding, regulation and connection

How this can be used in practice

Example in practice

An example of this work in practice can be seen through the Baby & Me program delivered by the Rev. Bill Crews Foundation in Sydney.

This program integrates infant massage into a supportive group setting for parents and babies, alongside early relational and developmental support. Staff guide and support parents to use massage with their own baby, creating opportunities for connection, co-regulation and confidence building.
